It’s like the Vatican’s own real-life version of Clue: the mystery of who leaked Vatican documents, including papal letters, has been a scandal for months, but on Friday Vatican police made an arrest, and it turns out they think the butler did it. Specifically, the “papal butler who serves the apartments of Pope Benedict,” according to Reuters, which identified him as Paolo Gabriele in a photo caption but so far not its story. Police say they found him with confidential documents on him. A Reuters report from February has a good rundown on the scandal: “From leaked letters by an archbishop who was transferred after he blew the whistle on what he saw as a web of corruption and cronyism, to a leaked poison pen memo which puts a number of cardinals in a bad light, to new suspicions about its bank, Vatican spokesmen have had their work cut out responding.”
