LAHORE, Pakistan – Officials say police have broken up an angry mob threatening to burn a church after the alleged burning of a Quran in eastern Pakistan.
Saeed Wahla, administrator of Gujranwala city, said the police on Saturday charged 300 protesters that were marching toward a church, infuriated over rumors that Qurans had been burned by Christians.
Nabil Awan, another local official, said a burned copy of Quran was found Saturday, while two weeks earler a couple burned pages from the holy book had turned up.
Christians make up 2 percent of Pakistan’s population and are often intimidated and subjected to mob violence.
