BEIJING (AFP) – Police have detained a 26-year-old man who has confessed to killing at least three children at a kindergarten in eastern China, state media said Wednesday, confirming the attack for the first time.
The man, identified as Fang Jiantang, was detained hours after Tuesday’s assault in the city of Zibo in Shandong province, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement from the city government.
Three children were killed instantly, while three others and four teachers were injured and taken to hospital, the report said. Two of the teachers were in serious condition.
Police have recovered the 60-centimetre (two-foot) long knife that Fang said he had used in the kindergarten rampage, Xinhua said. His motive was not immediately known and police were investigating.
