KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A U.S. military official says charges against an American soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians are expected to be filed within a week.
The official, a legal expert for U.S. forces in Afghanistan, says that if the soldier is charged, he would be tried in the United States. He is being held at the Fort Leavenworth military prison in the U.S.
The official says witnesses of the shooting spree a week ago in southern Kandahar province could be brought to the U.S. to testify.
The official, who is familiar with the case and the investigation, says there is no indication that more than one shooter was involved.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because of the sensitivity of the case.
