Charges in Afghan shootings expected within a week

Fly in rag-heads from Afghanistan to testify in the shooting? Yes, this is just the kind of stupid thing the United States government would do; spend $100,000 to bring in eye-witnesses who may or may not tell the truth; since they have nothing to lose by lying (it’s not as if they will be charged with perjury). KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A U.S. military official says charges against an American soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians are expected to be filed within a week.

The official, a legal expert for U.S. forces in Afghanistan, says that if the soldier is charged, he would be tried in the United States. He is being held at the Fort Leavenworth military prison in the U.S.

The official says witnesses of the shooting spree a week ago in southern Kandahar province could be brought to the U.S. to testify.

The official, who is familiar with the case and the investigation, says there is no indication that more than one shooter was involved.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because of the sensitivity of the case.
