The stories continue to circulate around the Casey Anthony murder trial. Now it is Jose Baez, her lead attorney, who is at the forefront of the news. We’ll see how long before the media drops this issue and moves on to the next BIG event. TGO

One of Casey Anthony’s attorneys said Friday that he was surprised by her acquittal on murder, abuse and manslaughter charges in her daughter’s death earlier this month.
“Was I surprised? The answer is yes,” Cheney Mason told members of the Tiger Bay Club of Central Florida on Friday, according to CNN affiliate WFTV.
Mason agreed with the verdict, obviously, but he praised the jury for making an unpopular decision. During his presentation, he maintained the defense position presented at trial that 2-year-old Caylee Anthony drowned in the family pool on June 16, 2008.
“I’ve known that since the first day I got on the case,” Mason added.
Mason stated that Anthony is safe and is in counseling, WFTV reported. He also said she is not currently considering any offers for books, movies or interviews.
“And by the way, who is going to believe her anyway?” Mason said of anything Anthony says in the future.
Meanwhile, there were reports over the weekend that one of Anthony’s other attorneys was in New York negotiating for such an interview. The New York Post and TMZ reported that Jose Baez was staying at a luxury New York hotel and discussing possible deals with ABC, NBC and CBS.
“Everyone is trying to buy him. He’s the key to Casey Anthony,” an unnamed “industry source” told the Post.
The Post quotes representatives for all three networks saying that they were not offering to pay for interviews with Anthony. NBC and CBS also rejected reports that they were offering Baez a job as a legal analyst in their efforts to win his client.
A publicist for Baez issued a brief statement on his behalf Friday, saying that “contrary to recent published reports, I am not negotiating any paid interviews with anyone.”
On Monday, Casey Anthony’s civil attorney, Charles Greene, filed a motion to strike a notice of deposition for her in the defamation case filed against her by Zenaida Gonzalez. The deposition is currently scheduled for October 8, but Greene argued that announcing the time or place of the event would endanger his client’s safety.
Greene also questioned why Gonzalez’s attorneys served Anthony with “an unnecessary deposition subpoena” and announced that service to the media, and then did it again with another subpoena after the court had already ordered the deposition. He accused the plaintiff’s attorneys of “using the judicial system as a platform for publicity stunts” and called their actions “nothing less than transparent harassment.”
