I’m at somewhat of a loss as to why the media keeps referring to the killer as the suspect. He’s not the suspect, he IS the killer. People saw him do it. There are no assumptions or conjecture here. I realize he has yet to stand trial, and that in the United States one is innocent until proven guilty, but that doesn’t translate to presuming that he fired the gun that killed 6 people if in fact he was seen doing it; which he was. WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States on Sunday charged Jared Lee Loughner, the man suspected of killing six people and wounding a congresswoman in Arizona, with five criminal counts, including attempted assassination.
Loughner, 22, faces one count of attempted assassination of a member of Congress; two counts of killing an officer of the United States; and two counts of attempted killing of an officer of the United States.
The charges were filed in U.S. federal court in Phoenix. local time (4 p.m. EST/2100 GMT) on Monday, the Justice Department said.
Loughner is the main suspect in a shooting rampage that targeted U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday. Six people were killed, including a U.S. judge, a Giffords aide and a 9-year-old girl. Giffords and 13 other people were wounded.
More charges against Loughner are possible, FBI Director Robert Mueller said at a news conference earlier in the day.
Evidence recovered in the initial investigation indicates that Loughner appeared at another public event hosted by Giffords in 2007, according to a court filing.
Investigators also found a document in a safe in Loughner’s residence that mentioned assassination plans, the filing said.
