Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (Calif.) office is reportedly receiving threatening calls and emails over Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination.
A spokesman for Feinstein, who is the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the office has gotten some “disrespectful and ugly” calls since Christine Blasey Ford spoke publicly about Kavanaugh allegedly sexually assaulting her when they were both in high school.
“Calls have included threats of bodily and sexual harm against staff. Emails have come in with threats and highly offensive insults to specific staff members by name,” a spokesman told McClatchy.
A spokesman for Feinstein confirmed to The Hill that they have received “lots of angry and nasty phone calls” over Kavanaugh’s nomination.
Feinstein has been at the center of the fight over how to handle the sexual assault allegation against Kavanaugh. The senator said last week that she had referred a letter from Ford to the FBI.
Feinstein has faced criticism from Republicans who argue she sat on the letter until the eleventh hour in an attempt to derail Kavanaugh’s nomination. Feinstein counters that she was trying to protect Ford’s privacy.
Feinstein’s office is the second to say publicly that they are receiving threatening calls and emails. Her spokesman noted that most of the calls including threats have come from outside of California.
GOP Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) has also spoken about receiving “vulgar” voicemails and mail that her staff is getting.
“My office has received some ugly voicemails, threats, terrible things said to my staff,” Collins told a Maine radio station on Wednesday.
