Deion Sanders was surprised because the kid who ran the 4.34 second 40 yards, weighing in at 215 pounds is white. Of course, had it been the other way around and a white commentator had been surprised, say, at the slow 40-time of a black athlete, it would have been curtains for him. He would have been tagged as a racist who profiled the individual.

Deion Sanders, who ran perhaps the most famous 40-yard dash in NFL scouting combine history, was really excited about Penn State safety Troy Apke’s 40.
Why would Sanders be so surprised? Here’s Apke …
Hmmm. Here was Deion’s reaction when Apke ran an impressive 4.35-second 40:
“Oh man, he can run,” Sanders said, stopping the conversation he was having with NFL Network analysts Mike Mayock and Rich Eisen.
“Why are you surprised Deion?” Mayock joked.
“You know why I’m surprised. I can’t say it on TV. But he can run run,” Sanders said.
Yes, that’s (presumably) a joke about Apke being white and running fast.
“You don’t see that much. Let’s call it what it is,” Sanders said.
Sanders then went up to Apke, gave him a hug and asked him how he said his last name before butchering a guess.
Apke is turning heads with his combine workout (including a 41-inch vertical leap), but he comes from an athletic family. Apke’s mother was a track athlete at the University of Pitt, and his father was a linebacker for the Panthers. Apke was a track standout in high school. He won the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League 100-meter title as a senior with a time of 10.81 seconds.
There was a buzz about Apke for his combine workout. But nobody was more surprised than Sanders.
