BAGHDAD (AFP) – An American soldier was killed and two wounded in a rocket or mortar attack on a US military base in central Iraq, a statement said on Sunday.
The soldier, who was not named, was killed in an “indirect fire attack” on a base in Diyala province north of Baghdad, the American military said, using its term for a rocket or mortar attack.
“The wounded were evacuated to a nearby military medical facility and are in stable condition,” the statement said.
It did not give any further details.
The US military said in a separate statement that an American soldier died of non-combat related causes in the northern province of Nineveh.
Sunday’s deaths bring to 4,384 the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq since the 2003 US-led invasion of the country, according to an AFP tally based on independent website www.icasualties.org.
