Pope opens summit on Mideast Christians

More BS from Pope Benedict XVI…

What he actually means in the last sentence of the article is that he hopes the summit will be helpful in determining how to avoid losing followers and the income they generate for the Church. TGO

VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict has opened a crisis summit at the Vatican of Middle East bishops to discuss the future of Christians in the region.

War and violence in Iraq and the Holy Land have provoked an exodus of thousands of Christians. Harsh economic conditions have also prompted many faithful to leave their homeland.

Benedict told the region’s bishops during a homily in St. Peter’s Basilica Sunday that despite their difficulties, Christians must work for peace and justice in the region and foster dialogue with Jews and Muslims.

The pope said he witnessed the “joys and worries” of faithful in his pilgrimages to Turkey, the Holy Land and Cyprus. He said he hoped the two-week summit would help revive the unity of Middle East Catholics.
