Bin Laden ‘far buried’ in remote region: Petraeus

At the rate we’re going, Osama bin Laden will die of old age before we get to him.

Really folks, it’s been almost 9 years since September 11, 2001, and now a United States general tells us that Osama bin Laden “… is ‘far buried’ in the remote mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan.” I thought we knew that back in 2001, before our then inept dictator, I mean president, along with his equally inept administration decided to invade Iraq instead of Afghanistan. What a farce this whole spectacle has been. The invasion of Iraq, the subsequent half-ass invasion of Afghanistan, our continued military presence in Iraq and dilly-dallying in Afghanistan. I say dilly-dallying because the United States military, and only the United States military, needs to be cognizant of avoiding civilian casualties (our enemies couldn’t  care less about killing our civilians).

I thought this would all change with Barack Obama, but it all remains the same. This basically tells me that it really doesn’t matter who the president is. George W. Bush, Barack Obama or Humpty Dumpty; it makes no difference. The people of this country really believe that who we elect as president makes a difference. People get all riled up discussing politics and whether Democrats are too liberal or Republicans too conservative. In truth it’s all bullshit. This country is on a path, like a speeding locomotive, and nothing will alter its course. We can elect a redneck president such as George W. Bush, a black president such as Barack Obama, or should I dare say, a woman (and ding-bat) such as Sarah Palin (the American electorate really can’t be THAT stupid) and yet nothing would change.

As a friend of mine would say: this is all a game. TGO

WASHINGTON (AFP) – General David Petraeus said Sunday Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is “far buried” in the remote mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan but capturing the “iconic figure” remains a key task.

“I don’t think anyone knows where Osama bin Laden is,” the head of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan told NBC television’s “Meet the Press” when asked about the Al-Qaeda leader’s whereabouts.

“The fact that it took him four weeks to get a congratulatory message out or a message of condolence… indicates literally how far buried he is probably in the very, very most remote and mountainous region.”

Petraeus appeared to be referring to a January 25 message by Bin Laden congratulating a young Nigerian for a failed attempt to blow up a US-bound airliner on Christmas Day.

Despite the difficulty in locating him, Petraeus said Bin Laden “remains an iconic figure and I think capturing or killing (him) is still a very, very important task for all of those who are engaged in counter-terrorism around the world.”

The issue of Islamist terrorism will not go away with Osama Bin laden. Whether or not he is alive, is no longer important, as the war on terror will go on for a long long time, so as the expansion of American dominance in the region …. !

Agreed. I was just responding to the article. I suppose the reason he is still being pursued is that it would theoretically be a psychological defeat for the terrorists; to have their iconic figure captured and/or killed. And maybe even more importantly, a psychological victory for the Americans.
