The Gulf oil spill was unquestionably a horrific incident. It will take years for the environment to recover from this catastrophe. But really folks, is prayer the best these evangelical Christians can offer?
I visited the Evangelical Environmental Network’s website and immediately saw the tab labeled ‘Donate Now’. No question these people have taken in huge sums of money from the ignorant masses that support them. How about sharing some of that money with the people who have lost their jobs as a result of the oil spill? Prayers are cheap, they cost nothing and resolve nothing; they’re just words. If there was a God, and he really cared about what happened in this small insignificant planet, catastrophes such as the oil spill with all its negative consequences wouldn’t occur. What makes people think that prayer after the fact would make a difference? How about doing something relevant instead? Hands that help are better than lips that pray. TGO

Leaders of a group that encourages evangelical Christians to care for the environment say the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico raises moral challenges for the country.
The Revs. Jim Ball and Mitchell Hescox, leaders of the Evangelical Environmental Network, are visiting southern Louisiana to pray with people who have lost jobs because of the spill.
Joining them is the Rev. Galen Carey of the National Association of Evangelicals.
Ball says they took a boat ride off the coast Thursday and were saddened by sights of oil-spattered marshes where birds were nesting.
He says the oil spill is a stain on the nation’s stewardship of God’s creation, and should inspire people of faith to embrace cleaner energy sources. Ball says how the nation responds to the disaster is a matter of values.
These evangelical Christians are the same people that elected George Bush and Dick Chaney, who basically told the big oil companies to ignore safety precautions and environmental concerns so that they could speed up drilling and cut costs. But now suddenly they’re concerned about environmental damage. Give me a break!
Yes, you’re absolutely right, these evangelical (fundamentalist) Christians are a bunch of hypocrites!
