What exactly is Social Justice? | Thomas Sowell

This video is a narration of the writings from Thomas Sowell, pictured below. I consider him to be one of the great intellectuals of the last 50 years.

Here, the discussion deals with Social Justice, which is one of those wishy-washy terms loved by the Left, who live with this scatter-brain, utopian view of life and reality.

Everything with them is a “view”. They view society as unjust. They view inequalities as unfair. They view the poor as oppressed. They view the homeless as society’s victims. They have a great many views (injustices) but their approach to solve these views almost inevitably fail.

For example, handing out free syringes to homeless drug addicts, as they do in San Francisco, is not going to solve their addiction, any more than allowing them to erect tents in public parks or city sidewalks is going to curb the homeless issue (pun intended). No cash bail reform, which puts criminals right back out in the street after committing a crime, is not going to reduce crime, quite the contrary.

The truth of the matter is that the Left’s savior-attitude is silly. Life is not just. Different people are born at different times in history, in different countries, to different parents, with different appearances, talents, ambitions, etc. A security guard at your local Walmart will never make the same salary as a brain surgeon, nor should he or she. A decent, law-abiding citizen deserves greater respect than a thief, regardless of the bad breaks which may have led an individual to commit crimes. While these are obvious examples, it seems that the Left is often trying to bridge the gap between the individuals in each of these two scenarios, inevitably by favoring the security guard, or thief without a need to do so. Taking money from the wealthy to give to the poor is not fair to those who are wealthy. If the wealthy became wealthy through illegal activities they should be penalized, but not if they earned their money fair and square. It is very easy for liberals to demand that the wealthy turn over their money, as long as it is not they who are doing so.

In other words, liberals try to solve problems where no problems exist and in doing so create a much larger problem for society. This is ‘social justice’.

There will always be wealthy people, poor people, educated people, uneducated people, intelligent people, non-intelligent people, fortunate people, unfortunate people, honest people, dishonest people, hard-working people, lazy people, good people, bad people, etc. Individuals should be dealt with as they are, not as the Left wants them to be.
