LAGOS (AFP) – More than 17,000 people died in about 31,000 road accidents across Nigeria between 2007 and 2009, according to official statistics released on Sunday by the federal government road safety agency.

More than 73,000 were injured in these accidents during the period under review, said the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), which added that it hopes to achieve a 50 percent reduction in road traffic fatality over last year’s figure of 5,690.

Undisciplined, reckless driving, illiteracy, bad road networks and poor vehicle maintenance are often cited as reasons for road crashes and fatalities in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation.
