Pastor Ed Young of the Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas, and his wife Lisa recently conducted an unusual publicity stunt to mark the publication of their new book, “Sexperiment: 7 Days to Lasting Intimacy with Your Spouse.”
What was the publicity stunt?
According to the Houston Chronicle, Young and his wife held what they call a “bed-in” on the roof of their church. They were in bed for 24 hours, fully clothed against the North Texas cold, conducting interviews and conversations via Skype about their understanding of the Biblical view of sex.
What is the approach of “Sexperiment?”
The view expressed by the Youngs is that while society holds too great a value in uninhibited sex, the Church has too often placed too little a value in sex inside marriage. Sex, in their view, is God’s gift to human beings and is meant to be enjoyed, with both passion and pleasure. Good sex within marriage leads to a good marriage overall.
What was the Sexperiment challenge?
The challenge was for all married couples in the Fellowship Church to have sex once a night for seven days. The theory is that fulfilling such a challenge would deepen intimacy and give Christian couples a better appreciation of their marriage relationship.
What is the Fellowship Church?
The Fellowship Church is an evangelical church that is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, though it does not publicize those ties. It has been operating at its current facility since 1998. The church has a heavy emphasis on education and childhood development. Sermons are broadcast every Sunday on the ABC Family Network. Their main church is just north of the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. The church has three satellite facilities, two in the Dallas area, one in Miami.
Who is Ed Young?
Young is the son of an equally famous Pastor Ed Young, who preaches at the Second Baptist Church in Houston. He is the founding pastor of the Fellowship Church. A report from a Dallas TV station attempted to make an issue of Pastor Young’s use of a private jet, suggesting that this was far too lavish a perk for a man of the cloth. The Youngs also own a 2,600-square-foot condo in Miami at the cost of $1.1 million. Young, through his public relations firm, replied the plane was used on church ministry business, including frequent trips to the Miami satellite church. The news story suggests that he uses the jet for pleasure trips, often combining them with church business.
