Casey Anthony receives jail time, but likely out soon

The Casey Anthony murder trial, and all associated sentencing, is finally coming to an end. Soon everyone will know how much more jail time she will serve and the exact day when she will be released. At that time, the circus will once again commence.

In the meantime, it was reported that her parents are looking to make a deal for their story; looking for a “big payday,” as a reporter indicated. This may explain why they haven’t talked with their daughter or the media in the last two days. When they do in fact speak out, I wonder if they’re going to throw Casey under the bus? One thing is for sure, we haven’t heard the last of this… TGO

ORLANDO, Fla (Reuters) – A Florida judge on Thursday sentenced Casey Anthony to four years in jail for lying to police after her daughter disappeared, but said after credit for the time served she could be free by late this month or early August.

Anthony, 25, was acquitted of killing her 2-year-old daughter Caylee in 2008 but received the toughest possible sentence for lying to police during the investigation.

Each of the four misdemeanor counts Anthony was convicted of carried a maximum of one year in jail. Judge Belvin Perry ordered the one-year terms to run consecutively, and also imposed a $1,000 fine for each count.

In addition to receiving credit for the nearly three years she has spent behind bars since her arrest, Anthony also will get time for good behavior reduced from her jail sentence.

Lawyers and jail officials were to figure out exactly how much time off the sentence Anthony would get after court adjourned.

Though she must return to jail for now, the sentence is a far cry from the death penalty prosecutors had planned to seek if jurors found Anthony guilty of first-degree murder.

The prosecution said Anthony smothered Caylee with duct tape on June 16, 2008, drove around for several days with Caylee’s body in her car trunk and then dumped the remains in woods near the Anthony family home.

The defense argued that Caylee died in an accidental drowning in the family’s backyard pool.

Millions of Americans followed the trial for more than six weeks and many were stunned, even angered, by the verdict reached by jurors on Tuesday.

One juror told ABC News that there was not enough evidence to convict Anthony but stopped short of saying she was innocent.

Jurors also found Anthony not guilty of aggravated child abuse or aggravated manslaughter of a child.

All are agreed that the little girl died and that is a tragedy in and of itself. Another tragedy is that her mother, though not proven to be the killer, as parental guardian in charge of caring for Caylee Anthony, chose not to report the child missing, not for several hours, but for MORE THAN A MONTH.

Maybe the prosecutorial team did not provide motive and other things; but, is our jury system so embued in the television and movie drama (like Cold Case file, Law and Order” or CSI, that ALL things are considered defects because jurors EXPECT to be presented with all the evidence they see on television. Fact, this little girl died and forensic evidence was ignored. Several days in jail and time served? Please.

@Annie…The people, the media, everyone needs to get a grip, use the laws of logic and nothing else. A defendant can of course, waive their right to a trial by jury and request a trial by judge but if they go the way of this country’s legal system – English Law is the basis of the common law legal system used in the US – the jurors SHOULD EXPECT a defendant to be proven guilty (vie a vie, the evidence gathered by the state) because up until that very moment, a defendant is innocent, period. That is the way that our legal justice system was designed and works. As Casey sat in that courtroom while the proceedings went on, she sat there, as an innocent person. We the people, SHOULD EXPECT a jury, not to find a defendant guilty unless he or she were proven guilty. This was not even a murder trial as Cause of Death, was never even established. If, by all scientific methods, the fact that Caylee was murdered could not be established, you can’t jump from A to Z and convict someone for murder when in fact, for all intents and purposes, Caylee was not murdered. Forensic evidence was not ignored, it did not exist. At the end of the day, this system works exactly how it was designed to work, I guess we the people, rather than execute an innocent person, would rather let a guilty one walk. In the grand scheme of cultures and civilization, that makes us better.
