Pakistanis protest pope’s appeal on blasphemy laws

Yeah! Come on all you crazy Muslims, show that emotion and anger which  goes hand in hand with your faith. Continue to defend your barbaric and criminal blasphemy laws. Continue sentencing innocent people to death for presumably insulting your infamous prophet, Muhammad, who’s been dead for 1500 years. Continue living in the past; your future looks bleak. TGO

KARACHI, Pakistan – Islamist protesters have demonstrated in three cities against a call by Pope Benedict XVI for Pakistan to scrap its blasphemy laws.

The laws stipulate the death sentence for anyone insulting Islam’s prophet, Muhammad. Critics say the laws are often used to persecute Christians and other minorities or to settle personal vendettas.

Right-wing Islamist groups have recently rallied their base against any move to dilute the laws after the sentencing of a Christian woman to death for blasphemy attracted international condemnation.

Several hundred hard-liners protested Friday in Karachi and two other cities in support of the laws and against the pope for his remarks.

Last week, a liberal governor who had said the laws needed to be amended was gunned down by one of his guards in the capital.

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Police say 10 people have been killed in Pakistan’s largest city over the last 24 hours in what appears to be a fresh round of ethnic and political violence.

Police officer Rafiq Gul said Friday the slayings were “target killings”, the phrase used by authorities to describe political or ethnically motivated murders. He gave no more details.

Karachi, a port city of about 16 million, has a long history of political, ethnic and religious strife.

Last year bouts of violence claimed the lives of scores of people, weakening the governments as well as the already anemic economy.
